THIS week in Saints saw three players score hat-tricks and a try on debut for a player who, at that time, was only the club’s fourth Australian.

Hooker Paul Groves scored a hat-trick at the Boulevard as Saints triumphed over Hull FC. Dave Tanner, Paul Loughlin and Tommy Frodsham scored the other tries. Loughlin also kicked five goals.

40 Years Ago.

18 November 1984.

Saints 60 Keighley 8.

10-try Saints roared past Keighley in the John Player Trophy Round One at Knowsley Road.

Barry Ledger led the way with a hat-trick, and there was a brace each or Australian full back Phil Veivers and second row Paul Round. Denis Litherland, Graham Liptrot and Peter Gorley also crossed the whitewash with Sean Day converting all 10 tries.

Wakefield 13 St Helens 5.

Belle Vue was not a happy hunting ground for Saints this year, with this league reverse in between BBC2 Floodlit Trophy and Challenge Cup knockouts at Trinity. A Les Jones try and Kel Coslett goal was all Saints had to show for it.

22 November 1969.

Saints 41 Oldham 10.

Welsh wing Frank Wilson grabbed a hat-trick, with Les Jones, 2, Jeff Heaton, 2, Billy Benyon and Eric Chisnall also crossing in a big win over the Roughyeds.

60 Years Ago.

21 November 1964.

Saints 37 Barrow 3.

There was a try for Saints’ Australian debutant Dave Wood, who was playing as a triallist. The speedster signed and played 17 times for Saints before returning to Australia.

There were braces for Peter Harvey, Keith Northey and Len Killeen, with other tries from Billy Benyon and Alex Murphy.

17,500 packed into Headingley to see wing Eric Ledger cross twice, with centre Duggie Greenall and Welshmen Glyn Moses and George Parsons also scoring.

Joe Ball kicked three goals.

22 November 1924.

Saints 12 Broughton Rangers 2.

Tries came from George Cotton and Ernie Shaw, with Welsh international George Lewis kicking three goals. George Cotton’s wife Minnie would become famous in the 1960s for taking to the field on two occasions with her umbrella to protect her lodger, John Warlow.
