Barry Ledger, playing at 6, scored a hat-trick as Saints marched on their unbeaten run since Mal Meninga’s arrival. Meninga scored twice, with compatriot Phil Veivers grabbing another.
Other tries came from Neil Holding, Tony Burke, Andy Platt and Paul Round.

Saints 7 Salford 11.
Saints suffered an 11-7 BBC2 Floodlit knockout at hands of reigning champions Salford featuring St Helens men Alan Grice and Ellis Devlin.
Billy Benyon scored Saints’ only try with skipper Kel Coslett kicking two goals to lead 7-4 at the break. But they were overhauled by the Red Devils with a second half try from Peter Banner and goals from Superstar Keith Fielding.

Saints came a cropper a Post Office Road despite tries from Les Jones and Billy Benyon.

Hull KR 12 Saints 25.
South African wing Len Killeen scored a try and kicked five goals in an impressive win at Craven Park. Other tries came from Keith Northey, 2, Billy Benyon and Alex Murphy.

Saints 11 Barrow 4.
Saints beat the Shipbuilders with a try from tough as teak former Pontypool centre Don Gullick. Joe Ball kicked four goals – and he would join Barrow the following year.

Harold Clough scored Saints’ only try in their Wartime Emergency League defeat to the Loiners.
