Saints avenged the opening day defeat by the newly promoted Dons with Welshman Scott Gibbs grabbing two tries at Tattersfield. Paul Loughlin, Andy Haigh and Bobbie Goulding also cross, with the latter kicking two goals.

Warrington 14 Saints 20.
Fresh from the previous week’s Lancashire Cup victory, Saints fought back from an 8-4 half time deficit to march on. Sean Day’s five goals were crucial, as were Harry Pinner’s two drop goals with Neil Holding and Paul Round scoring the tries.

Hunslet 8 Saints 8.
Saints were held to a draw at newly-promoted Hunslet, who had dispensed with the prefix of New that year.
Full back Brian Parkes scored Saints’ only try with Harry Pinner providing two goals and a drop goal.

Whitehaven 9 Saints 10.
Saints came back from a 7-4 interval deficit to squeak a tight league game at the Recreation Ground.
Tries were scored by Jeff Heaton and Les Jones, with Kel Coslett kicking two goals.

Saints 26 Warrington 10.
A 13,500 crowd at Knowsley Road saw Saints dominate the Wire, with Len Killeen leading the way with a haul of one try and six goals.
Alex Murphy grabbed a try and a goal with packmen Cumbrian John Tembey and Cockney Cliff Watson also crossing.
70 Years Ago.

Workington Town 15 Saints 11.
A 9,385 crowd at Derwent Park saw Saints vanquished in west Cumbria.
Town had a strong team back then, with players like international loose forward Billy Ivison, wing Ike Southward and teenager Sol Roper.
Pat Lannon scored Saints’ try with Peter Metcalfe kicking four goals.
