30 Years Ago.

1 November 1994.

Saints 14 Australia 32.

We did not know it then, but this was the last time Saints would play the Australian tourists.

A 13,911 crowd saw Saints beaten by the Green and Golds shadow squad with most of the first team, including Mal Meninga, left out for the second test four days later.

Saints, missing test players Chris Joynt, Alan Hunte and Bobbie Goulding, scored tries through Andy Haigh and Bernard Dwyer.

Tommy Martyn kicked three goals. The tourists featured the fathers of two future Saints – with Wendell Sailor scoring a try and Paul Sironen sent off for elbowing Sonny Nickle.

David Fairleigh also lined up for the Kangaroos that day.

Saints 13 Wakefield Trinity 8.

New recruit from Pilkington Recs Denis Litherland scored his third try from his first four games in the red vee.

Welsh prop Mel James scored the other with Harry Pinner kicking three goals and a drop.

50 Years Ago.

2 November 1974.

Bramley 9 Saints 17.

Two tries from Eric Chisnall and one from John Walsh put Saints on the way against the Villagers in front of a 1,450 McLaren Field crowd.

60 Years Ago.

31 October 1964.

Saints 22 Oldham 6.

Tony Barrow, Peter Harvey, John Warlow and Doug Laughton were Saints’ try scorers in the league win over the Roughyeds. Len Killeen kicked five goals.

65 Years Ago.

31 October 1959.

Saints 4 Warrington 5.

Central Park was packed with 39,237 as Saints lost their Lancashire Cup Final against Warrington, with Brian Bevan grabbing the decisive try with Eric Fraser kicking a goal. Saints’ points came from two Austin Rhodes goals.
