40 Years Ago.
21 October 1984.
Saints 32 Oldham 5.
Tight at 8-5 at half time, Saints ran away with it in the second half. Tries were scored by Barry Ledger, Mal Meninga, 2, Neil Holding and Andy Platt. Paul Loughlin kicked five goals with Sean Day converting another.
50 Years Ago.
25 October 1974.
Saints 23 Rochdale Hornets 5.
A crowd of 3,500 saw Saints collect another two points after a strong start their league campaign.
Tries were scored by full back Geoff Pimblett and Welshmen Roy Mathias and John Mantle. Kel Coslett kicked a goal with John Walsh chipping over six.
60 Years Ago.
24 October 1964.
Saints 12 Swinton 4.
Remarkably this was Saints’ fifth consecutive Lancashire Cup Final win – and a fourth against Swinton in that period between 1960-64.
Joe Coan’s team lifted the ornate county prize in front of 17,383 at Wigan’s Central Park. Tries came from Billy Benyon and Mervyn Hicks with marksman Len Killeen kicking three goals.
65 Years Ago.
24 October 1959.
Saints 29 Hull 11.
South African flyer Jan Prinsloo scored a hat-trick as Saints routed the Black and Whites at Knowsley Road.
Saints’ other tries came from Alex Murphy and Tom McKinney, with full back Austin Rhodes kicking seven goals.
70 Years Ago.
23 October 1954.
Saints 30 Whitehaven 3.
Legendary centre Duggie Greenall and wingman Eric Ledger both grabbed a brace of tries as Saints put the Cumberland outfit to the sword.
Saints’ other tries came from graceful flankman Frank Carlton and powerful Welsh second row George Parsons.
Peter Metcalfe added six goals.
