NOW that the curtain has come down on the Super League season, there is an opportunity to reflect on what for large parts was a difficult one for the sport – which much of the season bedevilled with discussion about on and off field disciplinary.

But that was not the only thing that contributed to the games being something of a tough watch at times.

Saints coach Paul Wellens wants to see the way the play-offs were played and refereed to be a blueprint for the game next season.

In this instance he was talking generally about British rugby league, rather than specifically his own team’s performance which was generally regarded as having a disappointing season in terms of success and style of play.

Wellens said: “I think it has been a tough year for the sport.

“Obviously the way the games have been refereed and obviously we understand the reasons why (has been a factor) but getting some consistency around that is crucial.

“In the play-offs at the back end of the year there decisions that the referees didn't quite get right, but I think the flow of the game was refereed outstandingly well – and that is why we got really good, high-intensity games.

“I think that's a blueprint for us moving forward because some games during the year I am turning the TV off, not wanting to watch it.

“However, nobody did that for one second in any of those play-off games.

“That's what we have got to understand the game’s a product – let the players go and play.”
