LONG time Saints' fan Ken Halsall showed a particular interest in one of the images from the Saints in the Frame exhibition at the World of Glass recently.

It featured a dramatic shot of the Edington 'kop' packed to the rafters before the Wigan game on Good Friday 1966, with some fans dangerously climbing on to the roof to get a view of the game.

"I was there that day in 1966. The game against Wigan was also Alex Murphy's testimonial match and the players used to walk round the ground to collect money from the crowd.

"Saints had a great side then and from my 'spec' on the Popular Side I could see all the crowd come streaming into the ground. [Secretary] Basil Lowe made several pleas for the crowd to move towards the middle of the Popular Side and Edington and I think the official attendance was 35,000 or something like that.

"I was always on the ground early because I'm not the tallest, so wasn't affected. But what a memory."

The result was the construction of another entrance/exit point at the rear of the Edington Stand but it wasn't the biggest crowd Ken had been in.

"That was in 1959 when we played Wigan at Central Park in the league, when there was over 47,000 on.

"Saints lost 14-19 that day but in 1966 they beat Wigan 17-10 with Vol and Murphy scoring tries.

"My first final was the Lancashire Cup final against Swinton in 1960.

"Hooker Bob Dagnall played in all five successive final victories in the competition when Saints dominated it in the early 1960s but got 6 medals!

"In 1962, he received the medal meant for John Arkwright, who had been sent off beforehand.

"Daggy gave it to Arkie in the dressing room afterwards!"

And the exhibition?

"Some lovely memory-jerking stuff, well worth a visit," he said, after writing his approval in the visitors' book.

Saints in the Frame is on until Saturday 26th October and is free of charge.
