DAVID Baines, the MP for St Helens North, has been elected as chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group - vowing to do everything he can to champion the sport he loves.

Mr Baines, a lifelong Saints supporter, was voted in by his fellow MPs who make up the group at its annual general meeting.

The group exists to raise the profile of issues around rugby league within parliament and is the forum for MPs and Peers across all parties to discuss the most important issues affecting the sport.

The APPG aims to be a link between parliamentarians, government, stakeholders such as sponsors and, most importantly, the supporters.

Marie Rimmer, the Labour MP for St Helens South, remains as secretary, Chris Webb, Labour MP for Blackpool South, will be the treasurer while Lord Caine, Conservative Peer, becomes vice chair.

The RFL is the secretariat for the group.

Following the first meeting, details of the group’s activities and of future public meetings will be announced in due course.

Mr Baines, who grew up watching Saints from the Knowsley Road terraces and played youth rugby league at Blackbrook and Haydock, said: “I am delighted to take on the role of chair of this group to advocate for the sport of rugby league in Parliament.

"I pay tribute to my predecessor Judith Cummins MP for the work she has done over the past few years.

"As a lifelong St Helens fan and supporter of the game, I know how important it is to communities across the country and I will do everything I can to champion the sport."

Mr Baines, who is a regular attendee at Saints games, added: "I will be working to expand the group and look forward to meeting with all those who have an interest in growing our great game over the next few years.

"It's a critical time for the sport at every level and we'll make sure it has a strong voice in Parliament."
