ST HELENS Town got their Liverpool County Cup campaign underway in front 102 fans at PSD Rentals stadium, Ruskin with a 4-1 win against Forefield Rangers.

Despite Town dominating possession, Forefield came closest to an early goal when Weldon's free kick clipped the crossbar.

However, the deadlock would be broken half way through the first half when the impressive youngster Ethan Wetton would beat a defender on the left before unleashing a right foot thunderbolt into the roof of the Forefield net to put Town 1-0 up.

Within minutes it would be two as another of Town's exciting youngsters Charlie Leech would cross from the right and force Rangers defender Long to turn the ball into his own net.

Before half time Ryan Cook would make it three with a cool finish from close range but as with the previous week's game Town would again concede on the stroke of half time.

A defensive mix up allowed Eduardo Da Silva to finish for Rangers for a half time score of 3-1.

The second half saw Town on top again and chances would come and go. Pacey Garrett who drove from distance would see his shot saved by Rangers keeper Spicer and towering young centre back Jake Sant almost scored with a header from Roby's corner.

Impressive midfield trio of Garrett, Archie Hanson and James Jones seemed to be playing keep ball in the Rangers half at times but it was Jake Sant who was named man of the match.

As the award was announced to the crowd, Ryan Cook swooped to get his second of the game to make it 4-1 to Town.

Cook is hitting form just at the right time as he notched his sixth of the season and put the blues in the next round. Town are away to Knutsford FC next week in the Cheshire cup.
