THE four-strong Saints contingent named in Shaun Wane’s England Performance squad will discover on Tuesday whether they have made the cut for the two-match test series against Samoa.

But Saints boss Paul Wellens confirmed that all are fit and raring to go if selected – with none of them being withdrawn with injury.

Included in the larger squad are last year’s captain Jack Welsby, Dream Team prop Matty Lees, Saints vice-captain Morgan Knowles and veteran England hooker Daryl Clark.

England head coach Wane will finalise his squad on Tuesday, after Saturday’s Betfred Super League Grand Final.

The first ABK Beer International at The Brick Community Stadium in Wigan on Sunday, 27 October – with the second match at Headingley the following Saturday (2 November).

End of season surgeries are usually a given at the end of gruelling years, but when asked about any of his players needing procedures coach Paul Wellens replied: “There's not many.

“Lewis Murphy has undergone minor knee surgery, which is like three to four weeks, but he's going to be back for pre-season.

“But other than that there's nobody really scheduled in for any surgery which is encouraging.”

It means a clean bill of health for the club’s international contingent – should they get the nod from Wane, who will again be joined on the backroom staff by new Saints assistant/attack coach Lee Briers.

Wellens said: “All those lads who were named in the (performance) squad are extremely excited to go play those test matches against Samoa.

“It is obviously a good challenge for them and representing your country is a huge honour and we are looking forward to watching those guys playing those games.”

Saints return to pre-season in mid-November, but any players selected for England duty will only return in mid-late December.

“International duty does have an impact and those players go into the fall-out programme with England and then from the final game with Samoa they are going to need some time off as well.

“So they will probably come in the last week before Christmas just to get familiarised with the group again,” Wellens said.

Of the club’s long-term casualties, Wellens confirmed that Jake Wingfield will be ready for the start of the year after his recovery from shoulder surgery.

Wellens said: “He is a very fit lad and given the amount of problems that he has had with his shoulders it was important that we didn’t take any silly risks at the back end of last year despite the predicament we found ourselves in.

“We decided to give him the best chance he had of overcoming those problems.

“And when he does that and is on the field we always see what a quality player he is, so hopefully we can get a Jake Wingfield that is on the field consistently moving forward.”
