THIS Week in Saints looks back at the team’s matches from 10, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 years ago – with a couple of Grand Final wins for good measure.

10 Years Ago.

11 October 2014.

Saints 14 Wigan 6.

James’ Sit Down provided the musical backdrop in the Stretford End as Saints famously won a tumultuous Grand Final to put and end to the five game run of Old Trafford defeats.

The game was marred by the opening exchanges in which Wigan prop Ben Flower was red carded for punching Saints half Lance Hohaia.

Trailing 6-2 at the break, Saints edged ahead through tries from Sia Soliola and Tommy Makinson, the latter from a perfect chip kick from Paul Wellens.

25 Years Ago.

9 October 1999.

Saints 8 Bradford 6.

Saints again came back from a 6-2 half time deficit to lift the Super League title. Super Kevin Iro put the ball on the Bradford line, with Sean Long coming off the bench to kick two goals.

30 Years Ago.

9 October 1994.

Saints 25 Leeds 18.

All the tries came from the three-quarters with Alan Hunte, Paul Loughlin and two from Anthony Sullivan helping Eric Hughes’ side see off Leeds.

Bobbie Goulding kicked four goals and a drop.

40 Years Ago.

10 October 1984.

Saints 31 Leigh 10.

A memorably noisy and raucous night under the Scaff at Knowsley Road saw Saints bounce past Leigh to reach the Lancashire Cup Final.

Phil Veivers grabbed his first ever try for Saints – and also crossing that day was compatriot Mal Meninga, Tony Burke, Barry Ledger and two from Paul Round.

50 Years Ago.

11 October 1974.

Saints 33 Keighley 7.

A hat-trick plus six goals from free-scoring centre John Walsh helped Saints see off Keighley. Their other touchdowns came from Les Jones, Billy Benyon, Dave Brown and John Mantle.

60 Years Ago.

10 October 1964.

Blackpool Borough 9 Saints 31.

A 5,000 Borough Park crowd saw tries from Tom Pimblett, Len Killeen, 2, Cen Williams, and Billy Benyon. Killeen kicked eight goals.

70 Years Ago.

9 October 1954.

Saints 13 Leeds 6.

A 19,000 crowd saw Saints beat the Loiners with a try from wingman Eric Ledger and five goals from Peter Metcalfe.
