SAINTS prop Matty Lees won three prizes at the club’s annual end of season awards held this week.

The strong-running, tough-tackling packman collected triple honours to show that the fans, players and coaching staff were all on the same page with their votes.

The England front rower went home with the Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Members’ Player of the Year awards.

That is a recognition for the way Lees has stepped up as a leader in the middle of the field, playing big minutes in the absence of so many key and experienced packmen.

Under 16s Player of the Year went to Chris Matagi, who now steps up into the club’s Academy side.

The Saints Academy had an outstanding season in 2024, finishing at the top of the regular season table but losing to Wigan in the Grand Final.

The Under 18s Player of the Year is captain and scrum half, George Whitby.

He had a fine season, scoring on a first team debut against Hull KR and being selected for England Academy as captain.

Although he was on the losing side in the Academy Grand Final, he was in the victorious Reserves finale against Wigan.

The Reserves Player of the Year went to packman Alfie Sinclair.

George Delaney followed up his 2023 breakthrough season by retaining the club’s Young Player of the Year title.

The strong-running Widnesian had to shoulder much more responsibility this year given the injury situation – playing in 25 matches in the thick of the action.

The 20-year-old earned a call up to the England squad to play in France and is on the shortlist for Super League Player of the Year.

There were other awards handed out on the night with the Club Wellbeing Ambassador honour going to Moses Mbye for his positive influence around the squad. Alongside this he completed a Diploma in Project Management in Australia and pursued work experience with EFT Construction (a Club sponsor) whilst playing.

He also supported and worked with St Helens Women’s team in his free time to help their development.

The Try of the Season went to Tommy Makinson for the vital try he scored in the Good Friday home victory over Wigan Warriors after collecting a Lewis Dodd kick.

The This Is Saints Award was won by Sione Mata’utia – an honour handed to a player for his efforts and one-percent-ers that may go unnoticed outside of the Club environment, but are held in high regard internally by players and coaching staff alike.

The Chairman’s Award, delivered by Eamonn McManus, is presented to an individual for their outstanding contribution to our Club.

For his contribution during 14 seasons at Saints – the award went to Tommy Makinson.
