TODAY’S Throwback Thursday picture is a flashback to the 1978 Challenge Cup Final between Saints and Leeds at Wembley.

The picture shows club captain Geoff Pimblett introducing his teammates to the accompanying Lord Derby as he goes along the Saints line up in the pre-match presentation.

In this picture is centre Derek Noonan, wing Les Jones and on the right is Welsh prop Mel James meeting the Challenge Cup Final guest of honour on the hallowed Wembley turf.

Saints look resplendent in their white track suit tops – and they had every reason to be confident given the big match experience in the ranks.

Plenty members of Eric Ashton’s 1978 side had been victorious at Wembley two years previously against Widnes.

Alas, it would be losers medals that they were handed by Lord Derby up the steps 90 or so minutes later.

Saints lost a pulsating final 14-12 despite hooker Graham Liptrot crossing the whitewash for the first score.

The fifth-minute try came after the Loiners full back Willie Oulton had spilled a Harry Pinner up and under and pounced on the loose ball to score.

Bill Francis doubled the lead eight minutes later, but alas Leeds clawed their way back and took the spoils with a couple of late drop goals from the boots of John Holmes and David Ward.

It would be the last time Saints would get to Wembley for nine years by which time there would only be one player remaining from the 1978 team. So the brainteaser is who played in both the 1978 and 1987 Wembley finals?
