LIVERPOOL St Helens notched up their first win of the season with a hard fought 19-13 win against Aldwinians.
In a game of the proverbial 'game of two halves' they ran in three tries in the first half and then conceded two in the second, before hanging on for an important win, with an excellent defensive display.
They did so after a terrific start, scoring two tries in the first six minutes.
The first attack saw hooker John Arnold charging over from short range to score in the right hand corner followed soon after by a 30 yard try from Matty Wood after an excellent break from Alex McClurg, converted by Wood.
Aldwinians responded with the greater possession for the next 20 minutes or so but in a taster of what was to come and some strong LSH tackling, with debutant Adam Snape having a fine game, failed to convert it into points on the board.
LSH, losing two men to yellow cards in this half, went further ahead with a touch of good fortune on the half hour mark when Ian Stanley made an interception on the half way line and ran under the posts to score, converted by Wood.
The final 10 minutes of the half saw the Moss Laners brilliantly stand firm against a series of attacks, a passage of play which undoubtedly had a bearing on the ultimate result.
The visitors started the second half in determined fashion and once again saw plenty of the ball, aided by a string of penalty calls against LSH.
With the LSH defence standing firm they managed two short range tries in the 49th and 57th minutes to pull the score back to 19-10 and then chose to add a penalty to their score, as the final whistle approached.
This week LSH are away at Aspull 3pm
