ST Helens Town claimed their first win of the season thanks to a 4-1 midweek success at Mersey Valley FC in Sale, writes Andy Langley.
Town, who had drawn 2-2 at Stretford Paddock in their Cheshire League season opener three days earlier, were facing much fancied opposition.
There wasn't a lot to separate the sides in the early stages, but as Town got on top the visitors' finishing proved decisive and two goals from Marc Gibson put them in full control.
Mersey Valley created chances and were denied by some good saves from young goalkeeper Lewis Jenkinson.
The home side's pressure finally paid off and they got one goal back, but their joy didn't last long as midfield workhorse Liam Beech rifled home from the edge of the box after the ball broke to him.
Town stayed in control during the second half, creating plenty of chances culminating in young Charlie Leech making it 4-1.
It was difficult to pick a man of the match with the 30-plus travelling supporters finally opting for Liam Beech.
Last Saturday’s scheduled home game against Maine Road Reserves was postponed, but Town will be away to Warrington Rylands Development Team this weekend, kick-off 2pm.
They will have a home game at the PSD Stadium, Ruskin Drive, against Haydock FC on Saturday, August 17, kick-off 3pm.
