IT never rains but it pours and for Saints last night’s 46-4 defeat at Leigh started to unravel from the moment of Jack Welsby’s second-minute departure through injury.
Welsby has an hamstring issue that will be scanned and assessed – but he was joined on the casualty list by Mark Percival, Moses Mbye and George Delaney.
Although Saints welcomed back Tommy Makinson and Matt Whitley, that positivity was soon cancelled out with another set of injuries.
Coach Paul Wellens said: “Jack is looking like a hamstring injury, and they are never short term injuries.
"We will get it scanned and assess the severity of that as soon as possible.
“We were all over the shop tonight in the halves because we lost Jack early.
“Moses (Mbye) went out there and ended up having to come off, we lost Jonny Lomax for a sin-bin and at one point we had Ben Davies in the halves.
“I think everybody got a go there in the halves at some point during the evening, so there there's a few things there which didn’t help when you're talking about playing the way that we want to play.
“And we very nearly ended up finishing the game with 12 men - George Delaney valiantly stayed out there almost on one leg at one point so.
“There were some difficult things we have to deal with tonight, but there's also some bits where we absolutely need to be better.”
He said centre Percival continued to be troubled, hence the reason for his early departure - and that could rule him out next week.
“Percy left with the same issue that he left the field with last week,” Wellens said.
“We looked after him all week because we needed to look after him and I thought he was outstanding tonight with the way he goes about his business and obviously he's disappointed with the fact that he comes out of the line and gets himself sin-binned.
“The way he carries the ball off his own try line and makes 25 metres there in those situations - not many players can do that.
“He is busted up a bit at the moment, doing it tough, but putting his hand up the team like a like a good number of other players are now.
“Again we just have to assess the situation but he'll do everything he can to put himself in the position to play.”
