SAINTS coach Paul Wellens could not to say too much with regards to the speculation linking the club to a double swoop for Lee Briers and Tristan Sailor.

But he nevertheless said plenty of positive things about both the Brisbane Broncos full back/stand off and the NRL outfit’s assistant coach.

The Australian papers this morning reported that Saints had snapped up both for next season, but as is the Saints way nothing ever officially comes out of the club until all the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed.

But Wellens was happy to give his personal appraisal of both Sailor and Briers.

The Saints boss said: “I watch a fair bit of the NRL and Tristan Sailor is a player that I have watched a number of times.

"He is a very elusive player and a very good player.

“St Helens are always looking to strengthen our squad and see where we can strengthen and always on the lookout for good players and Tristan is one of those.”

Meanwhile Wellens and Briers, as has been well-documented in the past during their playing days together, go back a long way.

“I am aware of the Lee Briers rumours,” Wellens said.

“Lee is someone I have known since a child and we grew up around the corner of each other near Knowsley Road.

“When I made my St Helens Academy debut he was my half back partner.

“We have known each other since we were kids and always got on with each other.

“We obviously played against each other a lot when he moved to Warrington and he was a fantastic player with a fantastic rugby brain.

"He is obviously doing brilliant things over in Brisbane at the moment.”
