RAINFORD are keeping up their challenge at the top of the Liverpool Competition Premier League after coming within a whisker of catching leaders Ormskirk.

On Saturday, Liam Gaskell (4-30) and Jason Login (3-8) combined to bowl out Leigh for 92 before the hosts wrapped up an eight wicket win. On Sunday, South African Ivan Kriek hit an unbeaten 100 to help Rainford post 173 all out against Rainhill who managed to cling on for the draw as they closed on 81-9 in a drawn game despite skipper John Dotter's 5-31.

It was a decent weekend for Rainhill who the previous day had thrashed Newton le Willows by nine wickets after Khalid Usman (5-23) and Luke Procter (4-36) bowled the visitors out for 102. Billy Godleman (46no) saw Rainhill home.

St Helens Town remain bottom of Division One but they came within a couple of runs of beating Highfield at Ruskin Drive. James Davies (3-31) and Sibusiso Maseko (3-38) helped reduce the visitors to 133-9. Town's reply ended when they were bowled out for 132.
