ST HELENS Town ended the season with a 4-3 win over Maine Road FC in front of a crowd of over 190 at a sun-baked Ruskin Drive.

Both teams formed a guard of honour to welcome St Helens football royalty Kenny Dixon on to the pitch as he retires from competitive football at the tender age of 48.

Kenny entered the arena alongside the Mayor of St Helens and mascots from Rainford Rangers JFC and St Helens Deafness Resource Centre.

Once the game kicked off it was Town who threatened early and were rewarded when Tom Jackson dribbled past two defenders before slotting into the far corner much to the delight of the Town fans.

Maine Road kicked into gear after this and a penalty from Taylor would bring them level.

Worse was yet to come for the Blues and further goals in a quick-fire 10 minute spell from Doyle on the break and then Campbell would put Maine Road 3-2 up.

Tom Jackson pulled one back just before halftime, doubling his tally thanks to the hard work of Ryan Cook.

Town would come out from the break rejuvenated and debutant Ethan Wetton would typify this with his runs forward after Manger Paul Piert brought him in the second half.

Fellow substitute Ethan Danku wowed the crowd with a series of skillful dribbles but it was another of Town's young guns Charlie Simpson who would fire home Town's equalizer to make it 3-3.

The Blues would win the game late on with a sharp finish from top scorer Liam Diggle who got his 21st league goal of the season after a mistake from the Maine Road keeper.

Max Buckley Benbow was man of the match who was pushed close by skipper Ian Roby and Town go forward to next season with optimism.
