I’m not going to go too overboard, but what a way to bounce back against Hull FC.

After such a disappointing result, and even more disappointing performance against Warrington in the Betfred Challenge Cup quarter final defeat, it was imperative that the Saints came back with a solid performance.

As I say, I’m not going to go over the top in my praise as this Hull FC side could possibly be one of the worst in the history of Betfred Super League!

They currently sit 11th in the table with only one win - against London and let’s be honest a game they should have lost.

However, your focus should never be about the opposition, more the things you can control and your own performance. Something Saints clearly did.

The emphatic 58-0 win propelled Saints back to the top of the Betfred ladder, albeit temporarily with Catalan leapfrogging them on Saturday following their demolition of Hull KR.

We have had a lot of negativity (from myself included) regarding our lack of attacking flair and finesse…but with no doubt plenty of words from Paul Wellens this week and a few changes in personnel we saw a different side.

The difference this week with the willingness to push off the ball, and players in motion resulted in a TEN try rout…..with nine different try scorers, only Waqa Blake scoring a double.

Wello admitted post-game that there had been some ‘honest conversations’ following the Wire defeat, and even though a 58-0 morale-boosting win against the Black and Whites, there is still improvement and work to be done.

I’ve no doubt everyone was on their game in training as defeats like that on Sunday certainly bring you back to earth. This can certainly be a good thing, and uncover issues you don’t quite see when still winning.

I thought Jonny Lomax led from the front, keeping his game simple and direct…creating opportunities for those around him with soft subtle passes and good skill. Jack Welsby moved up to the halves too, and no doubt that extra time on the ball than what he would see at full back caused the opposition some headaches.

I do think it will be a whole different proposition this Thursday though as we face an in-form Huddersfield at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

The Giants come off a close win against Leeds at Headingley, but also a huge shock win over the Catalan Dragons in the Betfred Challenge Cup the previous week.

Ian Watson's men will certainly come to town looking to extend their three match winning run in Betfred Super League.

Huddersfield have some real strike on their edges and are a team who like to throw the ball around. With Jake Connor in the side who knows what it going to happen.

But, it’s their size, pace and power on the fringes that are causing teams problems. I include two former Saints in that, Kevin Naiqama and the outstanding Adam Swift. Sam Halsall, and probably their best player Esan Marsters are the other two Saints edge defence must stop.

I have no doubts this will be a tough game, but again I believe Saints will be victorious at home and I’m in confident mood in predicting a win by 18 or more which is 9/4 at Betfred. Hope you all jumped on my win by 30 or more tip last week and made some money!

Title sponsors Betfred still have the Warriors as 5/4 favourites to lift the Grand Final trophy at Old Trafford with Saints not far behind at 9/4.

Next up are Catalans with Warrington at 15/2 with Leigh at 66/1 - and our other local club Salford out to 80/1 Finally, how good is it to see St Helens Council make a great gesture to the one and only James Roby, by renaming the St Helens Linkway, the James Roby Way.

Council leader David Baines said Robes is the ‘GOAT’, while Saints historian Alex Service said James is ‘a locally born phenomenon who‘s exploits were beyond equal’ ….I have to agree.

Let’s hope for Huddersfield on Thursday, and all future teams travelling to the TWS…it’s the ‘Road to Hell’ !
