A DERBY victory and an impressive away win saw St Helens Town pick up six points in one week.
First off was the rescheduled away visit to Haydock. After losing at home to Haydock only days earlier, Town needed to pick themselves up for a second league match against their cross town rivals.
A cold wet Tuesday evening, a difficult playing surface and a physical Haydock team were the challenge.
To Town’s credit they started lively as they attempted to play football on a damp grass pitch that had seen plenty of rain.
Haydock proved difficult to breakdown and would see their own chances either hit the woodwork or saved by Lewis Jenkinson, making his Town debut in goal.
However the 50 or so Town fans that braved the elements were rewarded for their loyalty on the 39 minute as talisman Liam Diggle put the Blues ahead.
A goalless second half would eventually see Town win and make amends for the defeat only three days earlier.
Player of the Match went to Scott Williams who worked tirelessly from midfield.
Then it was onto Saturday for yet another rescheduled fixture, this time down in Sale against Mersey Valley FC.
Cook hat trick in dominant Town performance.
Blues picked up a second consecutive win with a dominant away performance at Mersey Valley.
Captain Ian Roby opened the scoring on 33 minutes when a corner fell to the edge of the box and the right back drove the ball home with a sweet left foot finish. Within minutes it was 2-0 as a Tom Jackson cross was headed home by Ryan Cook to put Town up at half time.
Despite a really heavy pitch the St Helens team began the second half playing the type of football that had been on show earlier in the season. Youngster Charlie Simpson outmuscled his marker before cutting in to fire home from a narrow angle.
The next two goals were from Player of the Match Ryan Cook to claim the match ball with a hat-trick.
His third was a sight to behold as he dribbled past 3 defenders in close quarters before finishing.
Substitute Ethan Danku made it 6 on 60 minutes with a left foot finish and Town were cruising.
Valley scored a consolation against the run of play but the Blues would have the last word with a Liam Diggle strike with a few minutes remaining.
This was Diggle's second goal this week after his crucial goal on the previous Tuesday had beaten Haydock in a 1-0 win to make it a good week for the Blues.
