FC ST HELENS have completed the double with a win over Brocton to win the Champions Cup, writes Liam Grice.
It was a lightning quick start for the Stripes as they scored the opener within a minute after tireless forward Thomas Scarborough whipped in a wonderful low ball into full back Ethan Van-Aston who’s low effort found its way into the net.
FC were on it again just five minutes later as Scarborough latched onto the end of a low cross, but his effort was well saved by the outstretched Tony Allsopp to tip it over the bar.
After the quick start, chances were few and far between for either side, both sides cancelled each other out as they looked for the important second goal.
The best chance of the remainder of the half fell to Joe Barker, but he was again denied by Allsopp.
On the stroke of half-time, Brocton forward Regan Smith was controversially sent off as the referee adjudged the forward to have been to close to an FC free kick and he was sent for an early shower.
In the second half, it was the display of battling midfielder, Connor Spiers which was the standout performance.
The midfielder got onto the end of a long ball, but his acrobatic effort was just wide of the post.
Spiers once again found himself in behind after some brilliant footwork to roulette past two Brocton players, but his thunderous effort went just wide once again.
In the final few minutes, it was Joe Mason’s turn to become saviour.
As he produced two wonderful saves in added time to secure the result for the Stripes and confirm them as Champions Cup winner.
