ON DAY 11 of our Advent series we open the door to Saints' first ever Lancashire Cup Final winners, dating back to 20 November 1926.

The image captures the side that had just beaten huge local rivals St Helens Recs 10-2 in front of a 19,439 Wilderspool crowd.

Tries that afternoon were scored by legendary Saints pair Les Fairclough and Alf Ellaby.

Saints had got to the final after beating Pemberton Rovers, Swinton and then Widnes after a semi-final replay.

Recs had conquered Leigh, Rochdale and Salford to reach the final.

A final point to note from that Saints line up.

When Saints left Knowsley Road in 2010, stand off Fairclough and wingman Ellaby were both names in the All-Time Greatest 17. Ellaby's strike rate was a remarkable 280 tries from 289.

A further interesting point to note is Wilderspool, hosts of this fixture, would stage Saints' last ever Lancashire Cup Final triumph.

We will open another Saints door tomorrow.
