BILLINGE progressed into the next round of the JA Walton Cup after they beat Golborne Sports 5-4 on penalties on Saturday.

The game finished 3-3, was a magnificent spectacle and a great advert for Cheshire League football with both teams "going for it" for the full 90 minutes.

The Storks took the lead on three occasions but each time the visitors hit back almost immediately with - arguably - the key moment occurring in the 70th minute when Billinge captain Olly Filson committed a foul in his own penalty area.

The League's leading scorer - with two goals bagged already in the match - Jordan Coates stepped up but The Storks keeper Will White pulled off an excellent save to deny the prolific marksman his hat-trick.

Billinge started the game well as Sam Jones went close in the seventh minute after being put through by Ben Hamlett.

Golborne's response was immediate as Coates headed against the bar from a corner but in the 17th minute The Storks were ahead.

Lewis Dickson picked out Kian Green and the forward twisted and turned - leaving defenders on the floor in his wake - before slotting past Sports' keeper Tom Darbyshire.

Three minutes later Hamlett shot wide after the ball fell to him from a long throw-in but moments later Coates rose highest to meet a perfect Aaron Sykes, heading back over White for a superb equaliser.

The game was now going from one end to the other as Ben Garlick brought a great save out of White before Darbyshire saved well from Green.

However in the 39th minute Green got his second goal as he again got around the Golborne defence and slotted home.

The Billinge lead lasted only three minutes as Scott Walker fired home from long range to send the teams into the break level.

If the decent-sized crowd thought they'd see it all they were wrong as in the first minute of the second period Jones put a wicked ball - into the Golborne six-yard box - that bounced up and hit the visitors' Jamie Roberts and into the net.

This time the lead lasted less than a minute when Coates headed home at the back post.

The game then calmed down with much less action either side of the missed penalty and despite both teams having plenty of possession there were few chances and the game finished level at 3-3 - going straight to penalties.

As the shootout stood at 4-4 with no misses, Coates stepped up and White went the right way to deny the player for the second time in the game.

It was now down to Jamie Whittaker to step up and win the game which he did as he coolly slotted past Darbyshire.

St Helens Star:

After the game assistant manager Mark Filson said: "Regardless of the penalties, what we wanted was a reaction to last week's performance and we got that.

"We took the last twenty minutes from last week into the game and I thought we were excellent against a very good, experienced side.

"If we are to be picky we could look at the fact that we didn't hold onto the three leads we had, but they were all good goals from Golborne that we could do little about and we now look forward to the next round."

The performances of the players was recognised as Kian Green picked up The Fieldway Group man-of-the-match award, Will White was awarded the SCS Technologies supporters man-of-the-match accolade for his heroics in goal with Green also picking up the opposition's player of the game.

The Storks are back in League action next week when they visit Stye for a 2pm kick-off.

It was an excellent weekend for Billinge as their Under-17s won 2-1 at Leigh Town Under-17s.

Goals from Joey Carr Dickson and Aaron Quinn put the young Storks joint top of their league.
