FOR today's Advent Day 7 we dip into the Saints picture archives from 1984.

It is an image of the Saints team taken before their first home game at Knowsley Road since winning the 1984 Lancashire Cup.

Older fans will recall that after a barren spell of seven years without a pot, this Mal Meninga-inspired team beat Wigan at jam-packed Central Park in late October.

The team, coached by Billy Benyon, was largely homegrown with the exception of Australians Meninga and Phil Veivers, plus Cumbrian Peter Gorley, Tyke Tony Burke and the now sadly departed Sean Day from Culcheth.

Victory delivered Saints first piece of silverware since 1977.

The side went on to win the Premiership Final at Elland Road.

Note that Chris Arkwright - a key player from that Lancashire Cup winning line-up - is not on this picture.
