OLIVIA Hussey won a gold medal in Bulgaria for her nan.
The Fingerpost 17-year-old fought some of the highest ranked boxers in the world over three consecutive days to take a title in the Balkan Tournament.
Her latest success follows a glorious gold in the European Championships, Great Britain squad assessments and a triumphant debut for her country in Portugal last month, but her achievement in Bulgaria came under the strain of mourning her nan’s death.
“Olivia lost her nan on the Friday before she flew to Bulgaria on the Monday,” said Amanda Groarke, her coach at the Hook and Jab Boxing Club in Warrington “Although heartbroken that her nan had lost her battle with cancer, Olivia was more determined than ever to be in the gym that weekend knowing the importance of her final preparation.
“She was adamant that she would box her heart out and bring that gold home in memory of her nan who always supported her throughout her career.
“For Olivia to achieve this is just inspirational.”
Hussey first overcame Bulgarian champion Melis Yonuzova, a rough competitor, by remaining composed, holding her shape, moving well and displaying pure heart and grit to progress to the semi finals, where she squared up with Russia’s Nataliya Sychugova.
The two had met previously in the Europeans, with Hussey winning on a split decision, but this time she was much stronger.
With flurries of combinations, Hussey outboxed the southpaw in a 5-0 unanimous win.
Poland’s aggressive Patrycja Borys was her opponent in the final, but perfectly timed combinations caught her through the middle as a fantastic performance steered Hussey to gold.
“We cannot put into words how proud we all are of Olivia,” said Groarke.
“She is a true inspiration and role model.
“We all knew she could do this as she is so determined and focused and works so hard in the gym.
“We do believe this young lady is special with so much more to come, and her dream of being an Olympic Champion is within her sights.”
Groarke concluded that the success in Bulgaria is also perfect preparation for Hussey’s forthcoming world championships shot in India next month when she will be aiming to celebrate her 18th birthday by securing another gold medal for her country.
