England and New Zealand are level at the break after a tough, keenly contested opening 40 minutes.
England were first on the scoresheet when lovely soft hands for ex-Saint James Graham put Sam Burgess in a hole, and his round the man pass sent Sean O'Loughlin powering in on 13 minutes.
Kevin Sinfield kicked the goal and then slotted a penalty as England, with James Roby impressing at nine, getting on top.
But back came the World Cup holders.
And it was a special try with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck keeping the ball in play for Dean Whare to drive in.
A Shaun Johnson conversion and penalty levelled matters at 8-8 at the break.
