A RUGBY player could face an RFL investigation following the try celebration that infuriated some Saints supporters in Wigan’s victory at Langtree Park.

Moments after running in a 72nd minute try the Wigan forward Gareth Hock tossed the ball into the crowds of home supporters packed behind the posts in the West Stand.

After Hock was given a ticking off by referee Phil Bentham for his potentially inflammatory celebration, it was included in a report by the match commissioner, David Campbell, to the Rugby Football League (RFL).

The governing body has now referred the matter to its compliance department, which will examine video footage to assess whether the incident amounted to misconduct.

A RFL spokesman said: “The matter is not being treated as a (on-field) disciplinary issue (by the match review panel). It has instead been referred to the compliance unit.

“It will be looked into this week and decision will be made on whether action should be taken.”

Saints confirmed they received a handful of complaints about the incident. It is not clear whether there is any evidence to substantiate initial claims the ball may have hit a supporter.

In an earlier incident when Sam Tomkins celebrated a try in front of the West Stand, a Saints supporter subsequently ran on to the pitch. A man was arrested in connection with the incident but it was not clear this week whether he will face criminal charges.

The club, meanwhile, has played down reports of toilets being trashed at the away end of the stadium.

Bill Harris, ground safety officer, confirmed there was some “very minor damage” which will require repair.
