BOGUS parking notices that have been springing up across the town are part of scam, St Helens Council has warned.

Highways experts are warning motorists to be on their guard about the illegal signs that have been posted on street lamps and benches.

Fraudsters have copied the council’s logo in attempt to make the notices convincing.

They carrying warnings stating that from April 2 there will be no parking on public pathways and that anyone caught doing so will be faced with a £500 fine and three points on their driving licence.

Similar scams have operated elsewhere in the region, warned the council, and are usually followed up by calls from bogus enforcement officers pretending to be from the council who ask them to pay up.

A council spokeswoman said: “The council warn that this is a complete scam. If anyone is approached they are advised not to let them in and do not pay any money.”

One Star reader reported seeing the A5 size signs on Ledger Road, Main Close, Dickinson Close and one stretch of Old Whint Road, Haydock before they were removed.

Another reports they have been stuck up on every street sign along Hinckley Road, Islands Brow.

Anyone who spots a bogus sign is asked to report them to St Helens Council on 01744 676789 or Merseyside Police on 0151 709 6010.
