A SPECTACULAR footbridge linking St Helens town centre to the £25m Langtree Park is to be named the Saints Way, the Star can reveal.
Work is almost complete on the construction of the crossing over Linkway East that will be a walkway for supporters to the new stadium.
The bridge, which has been designed to reflect the shape of a rugby ball, features a twin arch, is 54metres long and has a deck suspended by 24 holding straps.
It is regarded as one of the final pieces in the jigsaw near the arena and follows the announcement that one of the approaches has been named after Saints chairman Eamonn McManus.
Council Leader Marie Rimmer suggested the name of the road as a “tribute to the drive and commitment” of McManus.
She said his “foresight and sheer determination” was the key force behind the stadium’s creation and that the road naming was a “fitting way to show everyone’s appreciation”.
McManus said this week he feels “humbled” by the honour being given to himself and the club.
He added: “In particular I glad it’s my family name which has been adopted as they, particularly my wife Betty, have been so supportive of my efforts over the last decade.
“More importantly, the council have been a resolute partner and supporter of the project throughout.
“I’m as happy for them as for the club that we near the end of this amazing achievement which will benefit the club and the town in equal measure for generations to come.”
