A GOLDEN vision that was hatched more than a decade ago has finally become reality after Saints were handed the keys to their spectacular new stadium.
Builders finished their work on the arena at Peasley Cross late on Monday night paving the way for Eamonn McManus and his board to take ownership of it.
It completes an arduous journey for a vast project that has overcome numerous setbacks and obstacles – including planning, financial and economic hurdles – along the way.
It also follows a campaign led by Saints’ supporters and your St Helens Star to ensure the rugby league club gets a modern home befitting the town.
Now the wheels are in motion for £2million of works to complete the main stand’s vast changing rooms, conference and corporate facilities, community zone, bars, shop, and offices ahead of next season.
McManus told the Star: “It’s not an exaggeration to say that when it opens it will be the biggest single event in the history of the town.
“Here is something the town can be proud of. It will undoubtedly lift everyone’s spirits and self esteem.
“Season ticket sales have been excellent so far and we know our supporters will make this stadium just as special and create a daunting place for opposition teams to visit.
"The players and coaching staff are itching to get out there and soak up the unique atmosphere of representing Saints in such a stunning arena."
Marie Rimmer, the leader of St Helens Council, which has pumped £8m into infrastructure surrounding the stadium and community facilities within it, said: “We need our public to invest and be proud of it - not just to talk about – use it.
“We need people to go there, getting season tickets and use it for other events. It’s about being proud of your town.
“Langtree, Saints, the council have done what we can, now we need our public and businesses to invest in it.”
