A VILLAGE brewery is set to compete in a top ale championship.

The Rainford-based George Wright Brewery will submit a total of four cask ales to be judged in the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) North Region Beer Competition 2011.

It is one of 80 breweries in the region to take part in the competition.

Between them, 250 casks of beer have been entered, which translates to a leg-wobbling 18,000 pints!

Owned and run by award-winning brewer Keith Wright, the brewery produces a wide range of traditional beers and ales that have won many local, regional and national awards.

The ales being entered by the George Wright Brewery include Cheeky Pheasant, described as having a ‘light amber colour and a citrus taste’; Pipe Dream, which is a straw-coloured best bitter with ‘a citrus nose and strong taste of grapefruit’ and Long Boat; a true bitter with ‘a very smooth start leaving a dry hoppy aftertaste’.

Following the competition, the venue will be opened to the public, who will get the chance to sample the ales for themselves.

The competition will be held in the Mercure Piccadilly Hotel, in Manchester, from October 27 to 29.
