AN inspirational couple is hoping to hit the bull’s eye and help a family member cancer sufferer.

Pub landlady Lorraine Hughes and fiancé James Barber have been running a darts tournament at the Phoenix Inn, St Helens, and have currently raised £328 for Breast Cancer Research.

Running every Wednesday at 8pm, the competition costs £6 to enter, with half the money going to the charity.

After eight weeks of heats, with four people each week progressing through, the grand finals night will take place on Wednesday, November 9.

The couple’s chosen charity is one close to their hearts, after James’s sister Sarah Stockton was diagnosed with breast cancer in January this year. She is currently undergoing treatment.

Lorraine said: “Sarah is, hopefully, in the final phase of treatment, which is 12 months on Herceptin.

“She is also involved in a drug trial, where they are monitoring her progress over the 12 months of treatment.

“Like any other sufferer, Sarah has experienced a lot of tiredness and the expected hair loss, but has soldiered on and not taken sick leave from her job, or stopped being a very busy mother and wife.

“She hasn’t, and didn’t even consider, giving up and for that she should be commended.”

Lorraine added: “We wanted to raise money for something that has undoubtedly helped in her treatment.”

To add to funds raised through entry fees and football cards, the couple hopes to further boost this total in the finals by adorning the pub walls with various posters of stars, such as Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Muhammad Ali, which they hope to auction off, as well as holding a prize raffle.
