Mersey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a large explosion, believed to have come from a cylinder, was heard by nearby residents who were later evacuated overnight to a nearby school.
The fire broke out at 7.30pm on Monday and crews remain at the scene this morning where they are damping down.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
Mersey Fire and Rescue confirmed it has 14 appliances, including 10 fire engines, dealing with the blaze that started at about 7.30pm.
Police confirmed officers were called to the garage on Kemble Street at about 7.40pm to assist in an evacuation of homes within 100 metres of the property.
A spokeswoman said: "It is not known at this stage whether the fire was started deliberately. "Knowsley Borough Council is setting up an emergency centre for anyone evacuated.
"Anyone not contacted directly by police officers and asked to evacuate should remain in their homes with the windows shut to avoid smoke inhalation.
"Anyone with any information is asked to call Merseyside Police."
