A POLICE investigation is underway after nine HGVs were seriously damaged when a fire broke out at a motor spares business.
The blaze tore through lorries parked at Kris Motor Spares at Normans Road, Sutton on Wednesday night.
Four fire crews were called to the incident at 8.45pm and remained on the scene until the following afternoon.
The cause of the blaze is being treated as suspicious and it is understood it may have been sparked by someone breaking into the site and attempting to steal vehicle batteries.
A joint investigation between the fire service and police is continuing as owners of the family run small business, which employs four people and has been running for 30 years, count the cost of the damage.
Bosses are said to be devastated by the damage and added that the culprit had been dicing with serious danger by trying to steal the batteries.
The company exports second hand spare parts and trucks, particularly to the Third World.
A spokesman for Mersey Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire initially affected one HGV but it quickly spread to eight others.
“A further eight HGVs were also slightly damaged by radiated heat. Crews remained at the scene until just after midnight.”
It is believed police will examine CCTV as part of their investigation.
