FAMILIES have been returning to their homes after a gas cylinder explosion sparked an evacuation of more than 100 properties.
Homes within 250 metres of the blast near Carole Close, Sutton Leach were swiftly evacuated and train services were disrupted on Wednesday evening.
Fire chiefs confirmed one acetylene cylinder had exploded after tyres were dumped beside them and set on fire.
Crews, who were called just before 6pm on Wednesday, October, dealt with another acetylene cylinder and three other canisters at the waste ground nearby a rail line in Sutton.
Firefighters continued to monitor and cool the two cylinders throughout Thursday morning.
However, a specialist from the British Oxygen Company was called in yesterday afternoon and determined that the cylinders were not dangerous.
The two containing acetylene were removed from the site and the other three cylinders are in the process of being removed, the fire service said.
Some families were put up in hotels overnight, while others took shelter at homes of friends and relatives.
