WHAT is happening on the fashion front in St Helens?
There seems to be a new trend of young people wearing pyjamas and moreover, females toting a head full of rollers!
It seems to be a craze that is on the increase and although many girls take the time to put on their make-up they seem quite happy to traipse around the town in their PJs and curlers.
I cannot understand why anyone would feel the need to roll out of bed in their nightclothes and not even bother to get dressed and look half decent when out shopping.
I must admit a few images come to mind! Andy Capp’s wife Flo, Last of the Summer Wines’ Nora Batty and the Cissie & Ada characters created by Les Dawson!
I am sure that it doesn’t take all day to curl your hair for a night out, and the piece de resistance are the worn down Ugg boots into which the PJs are tucked. These too have a life of their own and walking behind someone wearing them is like the back view of John Wayne trying to get on his horse!
This fad appears to have transpired in Liverpool and is now filtering into not only our town centre but many others including Warrington, Widnes, Southport and Chester! I still like to think I have style and flair when out and about. But it seems that ‘anything goes’ today.
Surely the men accompanying these women feel embarrassed when their partner strolls around the supermarket with their hair full of the most colossal rollers you have ever seen as well as wearing a pair of flannelette teddy bear-patterned pyjamas.
Have we now become a society where sophistication and sense of pride in one’s appearance are things of the past?
Or have we reached a point of complacency and lost all sense of dignity so we really don’t give a damn about how we appear in public?
I am all for individuality and standing out in a crowd, but for all the right reasons and not due to the fact that we all have such busy lives now that we can’t take the time to groom ourselves before facing the day ahead.
