THE visit of St Helens Sutton A.C. to Macclesfield for the last match in this year's National Junior League saw the competitors having to cope with some of the worst weather of our so-called summer with the cold wet conditions not being conducive to good athletic performances.
Nicola Quin however managed to defeat the conditions to set a new club junior record in the hammer of 18.87 metres and equalled her own club record of 21.7 secs in the 100 m. hurdles.
Tom Griffiths and John Appleton ran superbly in the 300 metres to take second places in the 'A' and 'B' races, John also ran a fine steeplechase to take fourth spot and to set new club records for the under 17s and junior age groups.
Ben Fisher won the javelin and set a new club junior discus record with his throw of 28.67m.
The club retained its position in the league but it is possible that the league may be reconstituted for next year.
Three new club records were set at the open meeting at the Victoria Park track, Warrington.
Thaddeus Amin-Somuah running 58.2 secs for the 400m, Vicky Johnson added 20 cm. to her own shot record as she reached 10.19 m, and Mike Jukes set a new under 13 yrs long jump record.
Dave Forrester took second place in the 800m in 2 min.6.8 secs and Adam Jukes was fourth in the long jump and put the shot 7.36m.
Youngster Owen Davidson won the cricket ball throw with 33.43m and long jumped 3.26 m.
Laura Crook was second in the shot with 7.27m and ran 75m in 10.9 secs and 150 m in 21.4 secs Zoe Woodward took the bronze in the 1500 m. in 5 min.21.7 secs, ran 65 m. in 11.3 secs and long jumped 3.43m Ben Fisher won the javelin with 53.99 m, Jake Davidson long jumped 5.83m and put the shot 10.57m. Elliot Barron ran 75m in 11.4 secs and 600 m. in 2 min.3.7 secs while Thaddeus Amin-Somuah added to his 400 m. record with wins in the 100 and 200 metre events.
Half a dozen of the club's senior ladies and one veteran man ran in the South Liverpool 5 mile road race held on a pleasant but testing course in and around Liverpool's Sefton Park.
Julia Eccleston was again the club's first finisher just edging out Louise Casey with Julia clocking 35 min.43 secs and Louise 35 min.48 secs.
Chris Dempsey was the club's next finisher in 39 min.42 secs with only man, John Irwin, clocking 44 min.21 secs.
The final three ladies finished quite close to one another Janet Holmes being the first in 44 min.43 secs, then Jean Dearing in 45 min.19 secs. and Dot Fairhurst in 45 min.40 secs.
More club records were set at the latest Grand Prix meeting at Stretford.
Dave Twigg set a new under 17s 800m record with his run of 2 min.0.72 secs.
Dave Forrester took three seconds off the under 15s 800 m record with his time of 2 min.5.22 secs, and Vicky Johnson improved her under 15s hammer record to 37.10 m and thus moved into third place in the national rankings.
