FORMER seaside hotelier Brian Winfield is hoping that someone can uncork a bottle mystery for him.
Brian, who originates from New Street, St Helens, and used to keep a shop in Haydock, came across the old-fashioned 'cod' type mineral bottle - complete with a glass marble stopper in the neck - while kitchen-extension work was being carried out at the Blackpool home of his daughter, Jane.
Embossed on it was the legend: Nuttall & Co., St Helens. And Brian was totally intrigued at discovering a bottle, manufactured in his old hometown, buried more than 40 miles away in Blackpool, where he has settled.
As his daughter's home was built in the 1930s, the bottle, found in the backfill of the footings, must now be something like 70 years old and could have been dumped by a workman engaged on constructing the house.
But Brian has never heard of the Nuttall company and would be delighted if any of our readers could provide some information about it. Please write in to Whalley's World if you can supply any details.
