BEN Fisher finally broke the five-year-old junior men's high jump record with his clearance of 1.75 m, as St Helens Sutton athletes gave outstanding performances at the Open Track meeting held at Stretford
All-rounder Ben also won the javelin with a throw of 54.32 m and to cap his fine season the 18-year-old former Newton High pupil has been rewarded with selection for the Northern Counties team for the inter-area match to be held at Ipswich.
Elsewhere there were other fine displays from Vicky Johnson in the hammer and discus.
Her throw of 39.14 metres was not only a 50 per cent improvement on her form at the beginning of the season, but also was sufficient to move her up into second place on the national rankings for the under 15s girls.
This being the highest ranking achieved by a member since the amalgamated club was formed in 1990. To round off her night, Vicky won the discus with a throw of 27.91 m.
Other record breakers were Steve Mayers and Dave Twigg, Steve reducing the junior men's 1500 m record to 4 min.30.64 secs and Dave breaking the 2 minute barrier in the 800 m for the first time as he reduced the old under 17s record by over a second.
There were personal best performances in the 1500 metres for Ian Hayburn and John Appleton.
Ian recording 4 min.30.64 secs and John 4 min.33.58 secs.
The club's Annual Meeting will be held in the Bull & Dog, Chester Lane on September 6 starting at 7.30 pm.
