COMPETING as a guest in the Mid-Lancashire league meeting held at Pendle, Vicky Johnson set a new club under 17s record for the hammer with her throw of 33.18 metres.
Discus
At the same meeting, Vicky won the under 15s discus event with a distance of 27.27 metres and took second place in the shot with her put of 9.50 metres.
One of the most anticipated events in the St Helens Sutton A.C. calendar is the John Orrell mile race.
This an annual event held in memory of a former Sutton Harrier, a miler, who died at a tragically young age.
The race is an handicap event and like all such races is bound to engender controversy about the quality of the handicapping.
Veteran
This year's winner was veteran Andy O'Connor who took full advantage of his 120 metre handicap to ensure that he was well placed to break away with 300 metres to go and then had sufficient "in the tank" to hold off the fast finishing Steve Mayers to win with a time of 4 min.36 secs.
A spirited finish by John Ashcroft saw him break away from the chasing pack to take third place.
