IN the two fixtures played on Tuesday last, August 31 and Saturday, September 4 no club playing both fixtures had a 100 per cent showing in the Star Premier Division. Carr's Hotel were held 4-4 at home by Stars on Tuesday but a hat trick by Craig Jones with others from Lee Tompkins and Paul Burke gave them a 5-1 home win over Sidac Social. West Park Eccy's Arms too had mixed fortunes over the two dates, a 5-2 home win over Clock Face Miners on the Tuesday was somewhat dampened as they sank 3-1 at Old Congs on Saturday, Darren Evans (2) and Malcolm Davies scoring for the Haydock side. The Dragon (Jay Taylor, Chris McCabe) went under, in the week, 2-3 to York (Thompson, Gill) but a renewed effort on Saturday saw them whip Eccleston United 4-0. Eccleston's second heavy defeat followed their 2-7 home drubbing by Rainford North End in mid week. Stars week-end game filtered out into another deadlock, this time a goalless one followed their 4-4 stalemate at Carr's. Windle Hotel's narrow 5-4 win over Old Congs on Tuesday must have taken all their energies away as they were lucky to hang on, at the week-end, for a 3-3 draw at home to Dentons Green (Phil Slater (2), Martin Leyland). On Tuesday, John Ody and Carl Chisnall were on target in Shoe's 3-1 away win at Denton's Green, David Leyland.
Sony's 2-2 draw in Division One at Roundhouse made up for their mid-week 1-2 home defeat by Prescot Leisure Reserves (Howy and Gallagher). Prescot Leisure's double act was a 3-2 away win at Sidac Social Reserves (Nuttall, S Traynor). British Lion's form has continued from last season as they completely outgunned Globe with an 11-0 beating on Tuesday, goals coming via Michael Parr (2), Martin Pinnington (4), Stevie McKensie (2), Kev Parr, Craig Caldwell and Neil Weaver. Rifle now seem to be coming too, with two fine wins following their bad start. A 2-1 home win over Pilkington A following a plucky 4-2 beating of Gerard Arms (Mike Wardale, Jas Bowes). Dragon Reserves 4-1 mid-week win over Junction gave them the impetus to snatch the points with a 3-2 win over Saracens head.
In Division Two, Top Nogs (Mike Simmons) came unstuck 2-1 at Rainford North End (Andy Walsh, Scott Owen) on Saturday, this following full marks from a 2-1 away win on Tuesday at Dentons Green Reserves thanks to Mike Simmons and Gareth Unsworth. Orange House, having a rough opening to the season, got their first point in midweek, drawing with a Barry Kenyon goal, 1-1 to newcomers Cricketers, but blotted their copybook by going under 8-5 away to another new side O.C.S. who were also beaten 3-5 in midweek by New Street. The Community Centre lads, 100 per cent up to Saturday, lost that asset by going under at the weekend, 0-1 by the progressive Boilermakers. Carborundum Eagles, 3-0 victors with goals from Phil Lancaster (2) and Paul Crowley at the weekend, over Dentons Green Reserves are determined to get back to higher status, but seem to be blowing hot and cold at present. Lingley, too following their first game defeat, have come to, drawing 3-3 at North End on Tuesday then beating Cricketers 4-0 at the weekend with Kev Fitzpatrick, Glynn Roberts and two Phil Sedgewick goals. Phil Sedgewick by the way hit all three goals at Rainford.
As stated before, this Tuesday evening's fixtures will be the final midweek fixtures until the season's ending.
This Saturday's fixtures will be severely interrupted due to clubs and referees being involved in the Liverpool CFA Cup competitions.
Several Combination clubs are engaged in these ties, but in the Intermediate Cup First Round, Division One Saracens Head are drawn at home to Division One Prescot Leisure Reserves.
In the Junior Cup Round One, Carr's Hotel will play host to Old Xaverians Reserves, while fellow Premier clubs, Dragon and The Stars have drawn byes.
All these kick off times will be 2.30pm - all games to be played to a finish, i.e. extra-time and penalties if necessary.
