TONIGHT The Green Room Sessions audience were treated to the debut gig of former Mixed Grill band members The Nihilites.
Made up of guitar and bass, The Nihilites successfully fuse together a funk/soul vibe with lush harmony arrangements. The music drives on at a constant vibrant rhythm interesting counterpoints and hook lines to draw in the listener.
This debut gig highlighted enormous potential and I hope The Nihilites will fulfil their dram of getting a full band behind them as I can see a definite market for their music as they are striving to do something which veers away from the norm.
Amrit Sond is an instrumentalist from London who has been attracting a lot of attention and is about to go on the road with Keith James on his songs of Nick Drake tour.
I was eagerly awaiting his performance and I certainly didn't go home disappointed. Having seen Michael Berk and Jon Gomm rip up the guitar rulebook I was probably expecting more of the same but I was pleasantly surprised at the variation in theme that Amrit presents. His songs are free flowing and experimental to the point that you don't know what is coming next and he explores every aspect of the guitar during his performance.
At times, Amrit has an extremely percussive sound as he hits the body of his guitar making it sound as though he has a drummer perched beside him. But for me, his best work was his ballads.
Sweet and tender, they cut through the noise of the audience and touch you deep inside. Who said you need lyrics in order to make people feel something?
I'm sure that Amrit Sond's music isn't for everyone as music this complex can be a little hard to digest, but I personally enjoyed his performance and can see why he has developed such a reputation for himself. Bravo!
