READING the ongoing letters about the planned demolition of Chapel Street and Argyll Street, it occurs to me how stressful this must be for the residents who live there.
Many of the residents are retired and have health problems, and it seems very unfair that this matter should go on for so long. Moving house is a very stressful event, even when chosen by the people themselves. These residents do not know where they are going to be living, and when proposed changes will happen. Many do not want to leave the area, and the community will be broken up. Several of the older residents may not be able to get mortgages if needed, and why should they when they have probably spent all their working lives paying for their homes, and making them comfortable.
They can make no financial calculations at present about what property to buy, that's assuming that they can afford to buy another property. Several may end up living in rented accommodation, with money left over from property sales, and will not be entitled to any help with their rent because of their savings. They will then be forced to use their nest egg, to pay for rents, which they may need later for health care.
Is anyone going to take responsibility if any of these residents becomes very ill with the stress of all this. At least resolve the issue quickly one way or the other, and let these people get on with their lives.
A WELLWISHER, (name and address supplied).
