THERE are those rare moments when a film manages to generate a collective gasp from its audience, stunning even the most hardened and cynical amongst us.

Drop your jaw in awe as Jamie Foxx's taxi driver takes the quickest route to a destination and even offers to waive the fee. Yet, this incredible occurrence is not the only reason that Michael Mann's latest movie stands out. Simply put, you'll struggle to find anything as exciting in the cinema this year.

Hitman Vincent (Tom Cruise) rides around LA in the backseat of Foxx's cab in a storyline that twists the otherwise mundane into something truly original.

Admittedly, it takes a while to get used to the notion that we should not be rooting for Cruise's remorseless killer. But by taming his trademark grin for a sinister glare, Vincent is transformed into a menacing character that couldn't be further removed from chirpy pilot Maverick in Top Gun.

The film's dramatic climax does not disappoint, but it is the tension built up throughout the story that elevates it beyond the expected thriller fare. Yes, there are plenty of excellently choreographed action scenes, but it is the interaction between Cruise and Foxx that keeps you riveted in your seat.

Combine this with a fantastic soundtrack and an unexpectedly black sense of humour and we realise that Mann has taken us on a ride that most films could only dream of.
