COLWYN Bay must have thought they had the points in the bag when they dismissed St Helens for only 104 on Saturday.
But Sanjay Pandey had other ideas, producing a devastating spell of fast bowling to return his best figures in English cricket - 10 overs, 8 wickets for 15 runs in an all out total of 45 on what is regarded as a batsman's wicket.
Saints' batsmen in the runs were Craig Horabin 32, Dave Lowe 19, Ian Moncrieff 17.
Ian Lawless, captaining the side in the absence of Darren Tyms scored a modest 12, but it was still enough to top 550 for the first time in the Liverpool Competition and augurs well for next season when he takes over the captaincy on a permanent basis.
The exciting, but unexpected result considerably aided the recovery of St Helens' correspondent Don Friar who suffered a stroke last week but was discharged from Whiston Hospital in time to join in the end of season celebrations. The second XI drew against Worsley, who had asked St Helens to bat first, scoring 145-6 declared after 45 overs.
Top scorers were Chris Carlisle 32, Mark Finney 30, Neil Hilton 23. Worsley ended the game on 127-3 after 33 overs, with Barry Fee, Neil Hilton and Gareth Griffiths sharing the wickets.
