quiz-whiz Myles

MYLES Morris was a talented man of many parts - pub quiz organiser, music lover, snooker player, crossword compiler and local history buff, to mention but a few of his interests.

But perhaps best of all, he was a great guy to share a pint with while mulling over the passing scene or reminiscing about the town's old-time sporting heroes, milestone events in local history and all the colourful characters once thick on the ground in St Helens.

Myles, who has died in hospital at the age of 74, leaves a wife, Betty, five daughters - Vanessa, Valerie, Vivien, Vicky and Verna - and nine grandchildren. The funeral service at St Anne's Church, Sutton, on Monday, was followed by cremation at St Helens.

And now, as a tribute to his popularity and dedicated quiz-night contributions, a special Myles Morris Memorial Trophy competition is being planned by his old question-time chums.

One of them, Andy Gerrard, a full-time quizmaster, explains: "It is proposed to hold the event at the Bull & Dog, Marshalls Cross - hopefully on an annual basis - and a local celebrity will be present to launch the competition. We are inviting teams to join in. Entry fees and any other proceeds will be donated to a charity of Betty's choice".
