SAINTS have extended the contracts of a trio of youngsters - the week after announcing the capture of veteran Bradford Bulls' warhorse Paul Anderson.
Half back James Roby, 18, who impressed during Sean Long's enforced absence during the latter end of the season, has been rewarded with a two-year deal.
And there are new contracts for 21-year-old wingman Ade Gardner and promising young full back Ian Hardman.
Roby has certainly grabbed the attention recently with his sharp attacking bursts and willingness to attack the line.
Saints chairman Eamonn McManus said: "The 2004 Saints team probably had the youngest average age in Super League.
"I have no doubt that many of these youngsters will improve year on year and we are aiming at the two main trophies, rather than one, in 2005."
The news follows on from the recent decision by player of the season Paul Wellens to agree on a four-deal with his home town club.
"I would single out Paul Wellens for particular praise. He is the most committed player in Super League and is the pride of the town, " McManus added.
Meanwhile the signing of 20 stone former Great Britain prop Anderson on a one-year deal, has raised a few eyebrows given the big man's age in such a youthful set up.
But coach Ian Millward believes the heavyweight front rower will give his pack that bit more oomph that has been lacking in past two seasons.
Millward said: "Paul will give us the extra size and directness in the front row which we need for next season.
"He will take some of the workload off our existing front rowers and they should benefit also in their effectiveness throughout the season."
Anderson will join Australian test international Jamie Lyon in the squad for the 2005 season.
Former skipper Chris Joynt, who is the same age as Anderson, had yet to make a decision on his future at the time the Star went to press.
The tackling statistics from Saints' last match at the season at Wigan show some strengths and a few weaknesses.
Stand-off Jason Hooper topped the count with 39, with Joynt second with 32 and industrious hooker Mick Higham weighing in with 29.
Hooper's strength this season has been his tackling and willingness to chase down kickers.
But what are his forwards doing?
Having a half back taking on this heavy tackling role might explain some of Saints' frequent dullness in attack since the end of May.
l Saints Supporters Club are taking bookings for GB's opening Tri Nations match with Australia at City of Manchester Stadium on October 30.
Coach seats cost £6/£8, leaving at 3.45pm.
