IN reference to the letter article in 'Dear Star,' dated 16.12.04 headed "Visitors can also spread infection," I entirely agree with Mr D. J Wilkinson.
I was admitted to St Helens Hospital in November, 1999 and every three months thereafter for two years. During this period I witnessed the early morning cleaners' duties.
The amount of rubbish and dirt left by the visitor's feet and eating habits was unbelievable but the cleaners did a fabulous job every day polishing the floor in my ward (the Pilkington Ward.)
When there used to be a Sister in charge years ago as in the Providence Hospital, the discipline they had was very strict but effective. The public respected the hygiene that was quite evident in those days. I think our modern day nurses have enough to cope with and I for one praise them all for the magnificent work that they carry out every day of the year.
