ST HELENS Sinfonietta presents a special concert on 22 January, with a raffle to raise funds for the Tsunami Disaster Appeal.

The concert will feature the Parkside Colliery Male Voice Choir, under its conductor, Alec Wallace. The group will perform pieces to suit a variety of tastes, ranging from popular favourites like 'When I'm 64' to spirituals such as 'Steal Away'. Distinguished local poet, Tom Owen, will present a choice of his own works.

Organisers of the event at St Helens United Reformed Church, Ormskirk Street, hope to raise upwards of £100 with the raffle.

Alan Free, Musical Director said, "Originally, all the proceeds from the raffle were going to benefit the Sinfonietta. But although we are always seeking funding, it's more important to donate the proceeds to this urgent cause."

St Helens Sinfonietta is the town's only professional chamber orchestra, featuring former members of major symphony orchestras and talented young players beginning their careers.

The event on Saturday 22 January begins at 7.30pm and tickets cost £5 for adults and £2 for children, available on the door or in advance by telephoning 01744 600846.
